Have Your Say: Updates to Clearwater’s Cemetery Bylaw

2025-12-06 – The District of Clearwater is seeking your input on the proposed Cemetery Management Bylaw No. 305, 2024, designed to modernize cemetery operations and better reflect community needs. This bylaw represents a significant update from the previous Cemetery Bylaw No. 78 (1978) and incorporates recommendations from the former Cemetery Advisory Committee and best practices in cemetery management.

Here are some of the key updates:

  • Introduction of Green Burial Options: Offering environmentally friendly burial methods that align with modern ecological practices.
  • Scattering Gardens: A serene space for the respectful scattering of cremated remains.
  • Updated Memorial Regulations: Clear specifications for markers, including allowed materials and sizes, ensuring consistency and easier maintenance.
  • Columbarium Enhancements: Improved guidelines for niches, including engraving options and standard sizes.
  • Cemetery Care Fund: Reinforcement of a perpetual fund to ensure long-term maintenance and upgrades.
  • Streamlined Interment Procedures: Updated processes for interment, disinterment, and scattering, including new options for memorialization.

This bylaw also addresses new lot configurations, green burial standards, and updated penalties for non-compliance.
