October 22, 2020- The Wells Gray Community Forests is grinding rotten Cedar / Hemlock on Road 2 at 8km – with the endeavor of utilizing all products from this old decadent forest stand. These blocks were logged in the winter of 2020 with the goal of shipping ALL products. The Community Forest shipped close to 11,000 meters of pulp, two types of cedar from these blocks to McBride and Barriere. Small quantities of saw log were generated and shipped to local mills. The final stage of this harvesting is to grind the rotten cedar hemlock for full utilization. The Community Forest set aside unmerchantable saw logs for firewood – this was available for the full summer (2020), all of the remaining firewood was removed by community members.
The Community Forest is a significant contributor to our community and area – through job creation, grants and donations.
