2025-07-18 – Good News for Dutch Lake – Water Quality Update!
We’re pleased to share some positive updates regarding Dutch Lake. Recent water testing through Interior Health’s Beach monitoring program at the Dutch Lake Beach Day Use Area (June 24 and July 8, 2025) indicates excellent water quality, with E. coli levels well below guidelines for safe swimming (<2 per 100ml). These results affirm that the lake remains safe and welcoming for recreational activities this summer!
However, E. coli levels represent just one aspect of overall lake health. We recognize there is more to maintaining a healthy, vibrant lake than bacterial levels alone.
Our Current Actions and Next Steps
The District of Clearwater is committed to monitoring and protecting Dutch Lake:
- Ongoing Beach water testing: We will continue testing E. coli levels through Interior Health’s beach Sampling program throughout the regular swimming season. Members of the public can check sample results here: https://services.interiorhealth.ca/publichealthprotection/watersamples.aspx
- Regular Monitoring: We have initiated a Level 1 monitoring program this summer, in collaboration with the BC Lake Stewardship and Monitoring Program (BCLSMP), tracking clarity, oxygen, and temperature on an ongoing basis.
- Detailed Monitoring Planned for 2026: In 2026, we plan to escalate our monitoring efforts to a Level 3 program, providing deeper insights into the lake’s nutrient levels and overall ecological conditions.
- Expert Consultation: Council has approved engaging an environmental consultant to revisit and update the findings of Dr. Rick Nordin’s original 1982 Dutch Lake study. This updated information will guide future discussions and decisions.
Potential Future Actions
We are actively considering various strategies and initiatives to further support lake health, including engagement with Simpcw First Nation and management of invasive species like Yellowflag Iris. However, these initiatives remain under review and will require further Council consideration before any action is taken.
Looking Ahead
Dutch Lake is a treasured asset that deserves our careful stewardship. By proactively addressing lake health from multiple perspectives—not just E. coli levels—we’re committed to protecting its beauty, ecological integrity, and recreational value for years to come.
Stay tuned for updates as we move forward, and thank you for helping us keep Dutch Lake beautiful!
