Parks & Maintenance
Yellow Flag Iris and Dutch Lake
What is Yellow Flag Iris?
- It is a plant that invades ditches, wetlands, streams, lake shorelines, and shallow ponds.
- It is not native to BC. Dutch Lake is infected.
- A perennial aquatic plant that can grow to be 1-1.5 m tall on a smooth green stem.
- The Flowers are bright yellow, often with brown spots or purple veins.
- It has 3 upward pointing petals and three downward pointing petals
- Leaves are flat and sword-shaped, up to 90 cm long and 3 cm wide.
- It’s a horticultural plant introduced from its native range of Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa.
- Yellow flag iris is designated as a Provincial Noxious Weed by the BC Weed Control Act.
Reproduction
- reproduces through seed dispersal, horizontal roots
- The seeds float on the water in spring and fall, causing them to spread quickly.
- Several hundreds of plants may be connected underwater due to the extensive root system, which creates a thick mat that damages wildlife habitat, reduces water flow, and crowds out native vegetation.
What is the District doing?
The week of June 8 – 12 contractors will be working on Dutch Lake deadheading the plants to restrict growth.
What can I do to help?
Deadheading plants is the most effective short-term solution. Never transplant to other areas.

Dutch Lake Improvements
Several projects are underway at Dutch Lake, including:
- A new beach safety program with ropes and buoys marking drop-off areas
- A life jacket loaner program in partnership with the Clearwater Rotary
- Improved safety signage
- Yellow Flag Iris remediation
- A reminder that swimming is not permitted at the boat launch.
Pet Etiquette
Dog waste bags are available at many parks and trails. After use please place bags in garbage bins — not along trails or hanging from trees.
Capostinsky Ball Park
The Ball Park has received a refresh for the season, including extensive infield improvements on both diamonds, upgraded bleacher seating at Diamond #1, and repairs and fresh paint throughout the park.
