Check your eligibility
You do not have to live in the jurisdiction for which you are running. To run for local government office, you must:
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Be 18 years of age or older on General Election Day
- Have lived in BC for at least six months before nomination day and
- Not be disqualified from being nominated, elected or holding office
Prospective candidates for local government office must be nominated by at least two eligible electors from the jurisdiction where the person is seeking election.
A nominator must be a qualified elector of the municipality where the candidate is running.
To nominate a candidate for local office, a nominator must:
- Be 18 years of age or older when they register to vote or will be 18 years of age or older on general voting day
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Have been a resident of B.C. for at least six months before registering to vote
- Be a resident in the municipality or electoral area for which the nomination is being made, or in the case of a non-property resident property elector, own real property in the municipality or electoral area, for 30 days immediately before the day of registration
- Not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law
File your papers during the Nomination period
Nomination papers can be filed between 9 am September 1 to 4 pm September 11, 2026. It’s recommended you book an appointment with the Chief Election Officer to ensure your nomination package is complete, however nomination packages may be accepted in person, by mail or by email to elections@docbc.ca . Once nomination packages are accepted they become public information. Along with your nomination papers, please provide a very short biography (approximately 150 words) and a recent headshot suitable for both website and print materials. The biography is about you rather than about your political positions. The photo should be high-resolution (minimum 2000 x 2000 pixels) JPEG or PNG.
